Turkey Street; Much More Than a Comedy

Turkey Street is full of the double entendre which Jack uses so well, making this a book you should never read on a train or a plane as your fellow passengers will wonder why you are giggling every few seconds and then roaring with laughter. But Turkey Street is much more than a comedy and a description of Turkish life. As you read it you are smacked in the face with the harsh realities of life as an expat.

I'm delighted the great people at Displaced Nation have include Turkey Street, Jack and Liam move to Bodrum on their Best Non-fiction list 2015. I'm in some great company.

In the sequel to his popular memoir, Perking the Pansies, which was based on his expat blog of this name, Scott continues to narrate, in his dryly entertaining style, the Anatolian adventures he and his partner, Liam, embarked on after moving from London to Bodrum. Note: This particular expat tale has a surprising finale.

The 'crash, bang, wallop' of the prologue hooked me straight away. From there it was a laugh a minute with colourful characters parading in and out of every chapter and vivid descriptions of scenery, places and people.

This book made me laugh out loud, cry, guiltily snigger, and wag metaphorical fingers at the VOMITS. As a seasoned visitor to Bodrum I know them all - the non-conformist Turks, the snooty ex-pats at Palmarina, the sexually ambiguous waiters, the chancers, the fabulous and the desperados. All of them with their own tales. A brilliant account of a couple attempting to navigate their way around strange dishes (tripe stew?!); even stranger characters - all told with affection, love and some seriously acid humour (though even the latter comes with a heart).
