GayStarNews, one of Britain's most respected online publications for the LGBT community, recently published an article by Jack Scott about gay like in Turkey. The piece was adapted from Jack's recently published eBook, Turkey, the Raw Guide.
There is widespread confusion about the difference between sex and sexuality. Many Turks only consider the passive male partner to be gay. This delusion reaches truly comic proportions when it comes to the Turkish armed forces. All Turkish men must serve their country at some time in their adult lives but gay men are barred.

Moving to any foreign land throws up a host of practical and cultural issues that everyone has to cope with but with the right advice, a guiding hand and lots of patience it can be a hugely rewarding experience.
  • Plan, plan and plan some more. Remember, it’s what the guide books and ‘how to’ manuals don’t tell you that will trip you up.
  • Try before you buy – rent for a while. Too many people have lost their shirts on a dream that turned into a nightmare. Act in haste and repent at leisure.
  • Find a gainful occupation. I don’t mean paid employment which is virtually impossible to obtain legally. I mean filling the day with something meaningful.

I was recently asked what inspired me to write my book and to sum up in one sentence what Perking the Pansies is all about. This got me thinking. It’s been so hectic since the book was first drafted that I’d almost forgotten how unambitious my original intentions had been. The blog actually began life as a monthly email commentary of our experiences in our foster land and the extraordinary people we encountered along the way. I called my dispatches ‘witterings’ and shared them with my wish-you-were-here’s in the UK.As the witterings grew, a blog was born and, as the months trickled by, a book started to form in my mind.
